* John Dickens, manager of the parliamentary reporting staff on the paper, was possibly the original model for Mr Micawber.

* Dickens described his foray into daily journalism as ‘a brief mistake’ but his desire’ to establish a newspaper was channelled into the creation of Household Words, launched in March 1850.

† The series was later printed as the book Pictures from Italy by Bradbury and Evans.

* Though, of course, since the landlords continued to export grain from Ireland, the Irish were no better off.

* In the period 1848–9 the second great national outbreak of cholera in Britain, spread rapidly through contaminated water supplies, killed over 60,000 people, twice as many as the first outbreak in the early 1830s. The disease killed two- thirds of those who contracted it, and over 14,000 deaths were in London alone. When it appeared to have passed, the Queen announced a day of national mourning at the end of 1849.

* Isambard Kingdom Brunel was one of the many who volunteered to be a special constable, though he thought it all rather ridiculous.

† The first known photograph of a crowd scene was taken at this meeting at Kennington Common. The Illustrated London News published a large engraving based on it.
